Van der Valk Groenesier: behind the 90% you never see
The successful series Grower for a Day returns with a new episode in which internationally renowned florist Joseph Massie trades his familiar studio for the nursery of Van der Valk Groenesier, one of the leading growers of Asparagus cut foliage in the Netherlands.
Van der Valk Groenesier is known for its consistent top quality and craftsmanship, built on more than forty years of experience in growing Asparagus cut foliage. The family business combines traditional cultivation expertise with sustainable production methods and delivers a reliable, high-quality product every day that is appreciated by florists worldwide.
What begins as a calm introduction to the products quickly turns into an intensive and educational experience. “Let’s just pause this for a moment, I’m going to meditate for half an hour. Because that’s the vibe I’m already getting from this greenhouse,” says Massie as he immerses himself in the unique atmosphere of the company.
During his visit, Joseph Massie gets a unique insight into the craftsmanship behind the cultivation of Asparagus cut foliage and other ornamental crops. He learns, among other things, the art of pinching, detangling and harvesting by hand. Work that, as he discovers himself, “can never be done by a robot.”
In addition to the cut foliage process, Massie is also introduced to a remarkable newcomer: a striking crop that was introduced less than a year ago. It marks a historic moment for the grower, who is adding a new product to the assortment for the first time in more than 50 years. “Most florists only see 10% of a product when it enters the shop and when it leaves the shop,” says Massie. “This episode is about that other 90%.”
