Klaus Wagener discovers craftsmanship and technology at Van Schie

“The plant will be your sensor.”

For a new episode of Grower for a Day, Klaus Wagener visits Decorum grower Van Schie, a specialist in potted lilies and potted chrysanthemums. During his visit, he discovers how craftsmanship, years of cultivation knowledge and new technology come together in a modern nursery.

Together with three different members of the Van Schie team, Klaus follows the entire process within the company. From the start of production and the daily care of the crop to the techniques used to gain an ever better understanding of what a plant needs.

A key topic during the visit is the role of technology in cultivation. New techniques make it possible to obtain more and more information directly from the crop. In this way, the plant itself becomes a sensor, as it were. As it is aptly put during the episode: “The plant will be your sensor.”

It is precisely this combination of technology and the grower’s eye that makes the visit interesting. After all, behind every potted lily and potted chrysanthemum lies a process in which knowledge, experience and continuous development come together.

In the web series Grower for a Day, Decorum takes well-known figures from the international world of flowers and plants behind the scenes at its growers’ nurseries. They ask questions, roll up their sleeves and discover the craftsmanship behind the products up close.

In this episode, it is Klaus Wagener’s turn to discover Van Schie and the world behind the potted lily and potted chrysanthemum.
