Schlumbergera is well-known as the flowering Christmas cactus. With its large, decorative flowers, this houseplant is striking in its appearance. It is called the Christmas cactus because that is usually the period when it flowers and because it is a member of the cactus family. When it is not flowering, it is still a fine green houseplant. Schlumbergera is a special one of its kind. It is originally an epiphyte: a plant that grows on other plants. Nor is this cactus variety found naturally in the hot desert; its home is in the Atlantic mountainous rainforest. They grow there in a relatively small region in the mountainous Brazilian coastal region around São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, at elevations between 100 and 1500 meters above sea level.
