Musa Basjoo

The Musa basjoo is a special garden plant that originates from the Himalayas in China, making it a hardy plant that dies down above ground in the winter and shoots back up again in the spring! This banana plant is also known as the ‘Japanese fibre banana’, because it’s grown for its fibres in Japan (on the Ryukyu Islands). These fibres are then used to bind books, amongst other things. In favourable conditions, it may even bloom and produce bananas!
