Michael Perry dives into the world of bulb crops at HL Hogervorst
In the latest episode of Grower for a Day, plant expert Mr. Plant Geek visits HL Hogervorst, a family business and renowned bulb nursery and forcing company in Noordwijk. HL Hogervorst combines traditional craftsmanship with modern cultivation techniques and has built one of the largest assortments of bulb-on-pot plants in the Netherlands. The company manages the entire process, from growing flower bulbs to delivering ready-to-bloom plants to florists, garden centres and wholesalers in the Netherlands and abroad, under the premium brand Decorum.
In this episode, Michael Perry receives a special task: he helps treat hyacinth bulbs so they start forming new “baby bulbs”. The process requires extreme precision. Remove too much and the bulb is damaged, remove too little and the desired effect will not occur. The episode shows how strict the selection process is, why the health of the bulbs is crucial and how much knowledge and craftsmanship lies behind a product that at first glance appears so small.
Sandra Hogervorst says:
“It was fantastic to see Michael at work. He immediately understands that with bulbs everything revolves around precision and timing. The process of creating new baby bulbs is complex, but he approached it with great enthusiasm and respect for the craft.”
