Michael Perry discovers the craftsmanship behind Decorum plants

How much work actually goes into producing a plant of the highest quality? In the latest episode of Grower for a Day, plant expert Michael Perry, better known as Mr. Plant Geek, spends a day working alongside three Decorum growers. From order processing to high-tech cultivation and meticulous manual work: an inspiring journey of discovery into the world behind the Decorum label.

The day begins at Vreugdenhil Bulbs & Plants, where Michael immediately gets to work on a real order of Zantedeschias. Placing labels, checking the quality of the plants, applying sleeves and preparing trays for transport. These tasks may seem straightforward, but speed, precision and attention to detail are essential.

He then visits Fa. Martin van der Velden, where modern technology plays a leading role. Michael discovers how advanced computer systems control water management in the Gerbera greenhouse and sees how a scanning machine assesses each plant individually based on quality characteristics such as the number of flowers, width and height. Ultimately, only the best plants earn the Decorum label.

The final stop is Van den Berg de Lier, a family business that has evolved from a lettuce grower into a specialist in colourful pot plants. Here, Michael experiences first-hand just how important manual work remains in modern horticulture. While pricking out seedlings and disbudding, he learns that removing flowers is a precise task that directly contributes to a stronger, healthier plant.
