The shade-tolerant plants of Decorum

Decorum cultivates flowers and plants in a range of varieties, sizes and heights. Along with indoor and outdoor varieties, each plant needs a certain amount of light. In this blog we are going to talk about 9 plants that thrive with less light, also called shade-tolerant plants! These are the shade-loving plants of Decorum.

Polyscias

Where Polyscias is placed is hugely important. Despite the fact that the name in Greek means ‘many’ (Poly) ‘shadow’ (Scias), the plant does need some light. But light differs a bit from sunlight of course. When the Polyscias plant is not put in the right place, its growth can be delayed or it can even drop its leaves.

Kentia

The Kentia palm is a true shade-tolerant plant and does not like direct sunlight. Howea Forsteriana (that is its Latin name) was originally a beautiful tropical plant. It grows naturally on Lord Howe Island near Australia. On that island the Kentia palm shelters under large trees and plants. These conditions make the Kentia a tropical houseplant that loves shade and does not do well in direct sunlight.

Cacti and Succulents

Hey, are you looking for plants that are easy to care for? Then cacti and succulents are the ideal match for you! Many people think that these plants should be placed in full sunlight because they originate from the desert. This is partly true; these plants are found in the desert and other places like high up in cold mountains. So what can you base your choice on? These plants are not bothered about the conditions they find themselves in. Adjust their watering to the location, as the higher the light intensity, the more water these plants need.

Sansevieria

To continue with the plants that are easy to care for, we arrive at Sansevieria. This plant is comparable to a cactus, with the greatest difference between them being the temperature. Sansevieria thrives best at a temperature between 15 and 25°C, while this is less important for a cactus. Sansevieria can do well in the shade where little sunlight comes. Did you know that the leaves of Sansevieria become darker when the plant receives less sunlight? In addition, a Sansevieria in the shade needs a lot less water.

Dracaena

Dracaena, also called the dragon tree, originally comes from Africa. In the wild you can often find the plant sheltering under other large trees and plants. Dracaena likes to have a place in the shade, but also needs light, so don’t put it in the basement or a dark attic room. When your dragon tree is standing in a place that is too bright, its leaves will turn yellow.
